Delays for thousands of passengers as Geneva airports closes

featured in News & reviews Author Caroline Face, Updated

Geneva airport has just re-opened today (Sunday) at around midday, after being closed since 01:00 this morning due to heavy snowfalls. Many flights in and out of the airport have been cancelled and those travelling are advised to contact their airlines for the latest info.

A spokesperson for the airport said the runways had seen the biggest snowfall since 1985. Teams worked all through the night to clear the runways of around 10 cm of snow, but this morning there were still build ups of around a metre of snow to clear from the aircraft taxiing and manoeuvring areas.

The airport called on a veritable armada of snow clearing equipment, using their own seven machines and contracting in another 30 snowclearers externally sourced.

This is actually the first time in 25 years that Geneva airport has had to be closed to air traffic for such a long time. The spokesperson commented : "The amount of snow we received at the airport was a lot more than forecast by the Swiss weather service and we have been off loading the snow into lorries all night and this morning."

Some 45 outbound flights and 25 inbound flights were cancelled or heavily delayed this morning, including easyJet flights affecting skiers arriving or heading back after their holidays and the airport was expecting around 100,000 people through the doors this weekend.
