easyJet makes the official announcement over closing its East Midlands base

featured in News & Reviews Author Caroline Face, Updated

We broke the story back in September that easyJet was planning on pulling out of all operations at East Midlands Airport and only today has the official announcement been made via the company's website.

Flights will cease top operate in and out of East Midlands at the close of play on the 5th January 2010. Despite the news being out in the public domain since September when we reported that bmibaby would be adding extra slots to their East Midlands to Geneva rotations to compensate for the loss of easyJet, it seems the airline that loves orange was still selling flights to and from East Midlands airport.

As it happens, we looked for flights last night (Sunday) from Geneva to East Midlands and we were presented with options and prices right through until April 2010. Since the official announcement, the website has been changed.

Even so, this means there are probably a fair amount of people who have already booked seats for their ski holiday on flights that will now be cancelled and easyJet is offering three options:

* A full refund

* A transfer to an alternative easyJet flight from another airport at no extra cost

* A transfer on to a bmibaby flight from East Midlands at no extra cost

So don't forget that if you've already booked flights from or to East Midlands Airport with easyJet for any date on or after the 6th January 2010, you will need to change your plans. It is claimed easyJet will be contacting customers shortly to let everyone know individually.
