Fatal Crevasse Fall for Gendarme Ski and Mountaineering Instructor
Experienced Mountaineer Dies In Training Exercise
A 40 year old gendarme ski and mountaineering instructor died on Saturday after he fell into a crevasse near the Grand Capucin, Chamonix. The man was ski touring on the glacier with one other when the incident occurred.
Both skiers were vastly experienced as they were members of the the CNISAG (National Centre for Education for Ski and Mountaineering for the Police) - the Chamonix based organisation that provides mountain rescue training to the PGHM. They were preparing an exercise for a CNISAG training course when the lead instructor reportedly fell 15m into the crevasse. The second man called for assistance and whilst he was able to be rescued, the lead instructor sadly died from his injuries.
Our thoughts go out to the victim's family and friends.
