Huge dumps of snow for Easter!

featured in News & Reviews Author Helen McGrory, Chamonix Reporter Updated

Was it Batman that used to say “Holy Moly”? Well even if it wasn't that's the only way to describe the amount of snow that's fallen today! It's incredible! Many of you will have already received our Dump Alert this morning, but the snow just hasn't stopped falling since about 6am. I've just cleared nearly 2 feet of snow from my car and it's knee deep powder in town.

Whilst most of the lifts were open this morning, by lunch time, the entire valley had closed down with the exception of Les Houches, the Flegere cable car and the Evettes chairlift due the heavy snowfall and 70 – 80 km/h winds at the top. The road up to Le Tour and the Col des Montets are also currently closed and snow tyres or chains are required to access the resort.

According to the forecast, we are expecting up to 60cms to fall today, another 30cms overnight and possibly yet another 30cms over Saturday and Sunday. The valley will take some securing tomorrow morning so delays in opening the areas for skiing are likely and be aware that the avalanche risk has now gone up to level 4 out of 5.

If you're travelling out tomorrow then anticipate some delays to your journey, as the weather is inevitably going to cause a bit of havoc at the airports and on the roads. Pack some sandwiches, don't forget your Travel Scrabble and just spend the extra journey time dreaming about the awesome conditions you're going to be skiing next week!

Happy Easter!
