Legionnaire dies on the couloir du Gouter
Lone climber loses his life on the couloir du Gouter, Mont Blanc
A 33 year old legionnaire suffered a fatal fall at 3600 metres on the couloir du Gouter, the notoriously dangerous slope which is climbed as part of many Mont Blanc summit attempts. The victim was a legionnaire from the 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment in Vaucluse. He was said to be out climbing on his own and for reasons yet to be determined fell to his death - a local Chamonix guide was on this route and witnessed the accident from afar, he gace the alert the to the Chamonix rescue services (PGHM).
The couloir du Gouter is part of the 'normal' route for those climbing the Mont Blanc, but is well known for the risk of rock fall en-route.
Last Sunday a un-roped 65 year old Frenchman died whilst on his way down from the Gouter refuge.
