Pollution means lower speed limits in Savoie and Haute Savoie

featured in News & Reviews Author Caroline Face, Updated

A lowering of speed limits for all routes normally classed at 90km/h or more has come into force today in both the Tarentaise and Haute Savoie areas.

Agencies monitoring pollution said that the levels had gone beyond safe over the weekend, leading the Prefectures in the region to activate a reduction in speed of 20km/h on roads with limits of 90km/h or more. This time it isn't just a recommendation, it's the law!

The stable weather conditions over the past days is the cause of the pollution, as emissions from heating and vehicles can't escape into the atmosphere with the static weather conditions in mountain areas. Resorts themselves often escape the worst of the pollution as they are in an inversion, meaning the small particles of pollution can escape more easily, according to weather boffins.

The main thing to remember is the speed limit, which is expected to be here until the middle of the week is law and can be enforced, so if you heading out in the car, please be aware the speed limit is reduced by 20km/h and that includes motorways.
