Swedish skier survives 600ft cliff jump
The Russian's aren't the only ones throwing themselves off things in the valley at the moment; Swedish freeskier Tomas Bergemalm has just willingly plummeted 600ft in a breathtaking cliff drop on the Vallée Blanche.
Tomas wanted one last challenge before he retired from the world of extreme skiing in order to spend more time with his family and this stunt was apparently too good to pass up,
“I knew I had to get involved with this jump, and spent five months training in Chamonix, France, to get to my best. I was also spending every winter in Canada training.”
Now aged 35 Tomas has been skiing since he was 15 and has competed internationally in Europe and Canada. Accompanied by his friend and photographer Patrick Lindquist they spent the day trekking to get to the cliff before setting up the shot; a bit of a climb is all in a day's work for Patrick as a winter sports photographer,
“if I have to climb mountains and sleep overnight in a tent at minus 20 degrees then so be it. It's a beautiful world out there and I will forever strive to capture it... you never know how these kind of shots will work out, but I'm really pleased with this one. This is my dream job.”
Tomas has assured his family that this will be his last death-defying stunt and that he will be taking it easy from now on...
