Tramway du Mont Blanc partially closed this summer

Following our recent report on the huge pocket of trapped water in the Tete Rousse glacier, it has been confirmed that the last stretch of the Tramway du Mont Blanc will be closed for the rest of the summer.

Important safety work needs to be carried out to drain the reservoir and prevent it from flooding into the valley below. With this in mind, the Refuge du Nid d'Aigle (2360m) and the final leg of the tram track will not be open to the public.

Meanwhile, the tram will still run from Le Fayet, stopping at St-Gervais-Les-Bains, Col de Voza and Bellevue, from where there are still plenty of walking trails available.

Compagnie du Mont Blanc spokeperson Jean-Claude Burnet explained the decision by saying that obviously it would make a dent in the summer takings, but they could not reasonably expect people to pay 30€ to take a tram ride underneath a glacier that may burst and flood. Which, when you put it like that seems fair enough…

Mountaineers planning to climb Mont Blanc will be able to carry on to Mont Lachat, between Bellevue and Nid d'Aigle. The Tete Rousse will still be accessible on foot via the Chemin des Rognes and Les Ruines, allowing alpinists a safer route around the danger zone.

The safety work should be completed by the end of October. Click here for more information on the Tramway du Mont Blanc
