Fresh Snow in Chamonix

Another Great Week in Chamonix

featured in Snow report Author Jen Tsang, Resort Reporter Updated

We had another fantastic week in Chamonix, and the forecast of fresh snow for the start of this week seems to have livened up the place!

The snow has also brought a noticeable rise in the number of people out and about in the resort. First, the blue skies, then the travel window opening up between the UK and France, plus the fresh snow seems to have ticked enough boxes for people to begin arriving into the resort to enjoy our mountains.

Although the new crowds lead to a few lift queues and a little congestion on the busier runs, it’s not enough to be a problem. I think it’s just been quiet for so long that any rise in numbers is both welcomed by all the businesses here, but also very noticeable on the snow as you suddenly have to wait for a chair at the lift stations!

It’s undoubtedly not reached February half term heights yet, and we have some time before Chamonix becomes truly busy with families making the most of the holiday period. But you definitely want to get out on the snow now if you can and make the most of it now.

Snow Report
The snow is holding up well under this new influx of skiers, mainly because temperatures - although not so cold as last week, have stayed cold enough that the snow isn’t melting away, nor is it soft enough to be easily swept into moguls. As a result, most runs retain their integrity late into the day.

With the fresh snow that fell over Monday and Tuesday, the pistes have had a needed freshen up. Visibility is mixed as the clouds have hung around in the resort. So there is a mix of blue skies and cloudy, flat light skies. So we are experiencing a combination of conditions. The snow feels pretty great on the pistes, so if the viability isn’t great, you can trust the snow and know that it isn’t icy.

Snow Forecast
Over the coming days, we see both clear sunny skies and clouds rolling in. Unfortunately, we don’t seem to be receiving any more snow this week. Temperatures remain consistent around -3C in the day/-6C at night but drop to -10C at points, so it will feel frigid if you are out in the evenings. They will then jump over the weekend to a balmy 1C, so we could see some warmer weather arriving for February.

Jen's Top Tips

  • Pack a variety of equipment - highlight and low light goggle lenses and layers!
  • Temperatures are low, so layers are essential. And don't forget to wrap up those children for their lessons!
  • If you are heading out at night, windchill is dropping the day temperatures by up to 10C, so really keep warm and stay safe.
  • Always check the avalanche risk and don't head off-piste if you don't have the correct information, equipment and guidance.
